Gagged War Protesters

Via Bondage Blog we get this context-less photograph of some gagged anti-war protesters:

cute female war protesters wearing mouth gags

I don’t know my Commonwealth flags, but I’m pretty sure that’s one of them printed on the gags.

That’s the Australian flag, I believe.

Its the Aussie flag

Yep, it’s the Australian flag, and those green triangle placards in the background are used by the Australian Greens Party, a green/socialist minor party here. I can’t say this for certain, but “End the Lies” and being gags means this is probably about the Woomera Detention Centre, where immigrants were being held, and which had some major problems a couple of years back with human rights violations.

For the record, the Greens themselves rarely engage in this sort of odd protest symbolism, but many people allied with the cause do.

In any case, gags are right up there on my list of Items of Clothing of Which I Approve.

No it’s definatly the Australian flag. I don’t recognise the location but the end the lies was not about Woomera (one of our immergartion detention centres, which has since been closed down). it was about lies being perpertrated by our government about terrorism and the wars in Iraq and Afganistan and also the lies about refugees. The federal election before thse ‘end the lies’ protests took place, the govenment got re-elected in part due to a red herring namely tampa. Tampa was a ship full of illegal immigants, which sunk. The govenment claimed they were “throwing children overboard”. That lie was exposed, the pics they showed on TV were cropped so you didn’t see the sinking ship. Terror legislation, too was part of this protest (hence the gags) the Australian government could (and still can) arrest you on suspispition (of anything really) and you are not even alowed to tell you partner, or employer you have been detained by ASIO (our spy agency). More recently (after this protest) there was the case of Dr muhummad Haneff, he was held for trupted up terror charges on no evidence, the government revoked his visa based on ‘character grounds’ which ofcourse based on secret intelligence. There was an outcry and it appears the sim card that was found at a london bombing (which was the only link, flimsy as it is, he was accused of giving the sim card to his cousin 12mounths prior. The sim card at the bombing however was a different sim card. Be warned temorary protection visas are anything but… and can be revolked at anytime for political gain. I guess every one knows about the lies perpertrated in order to legitimise the war in Iraq. It started of as Weapons of mass destruction, ofcourse there never were any, then it was Regime change (for the good of the Iraqi citizens) then it was protecting us from terrorism. Not that Afganistan had anything to do with september 11 attacks on New York and Washington (pentagon got attacked too, I sometimes forget). Apparantly the Iraq war has nothing to do with the fact that the world is running out of oil and the middle east has buckets of it.

p.s. The Greens bring thoes triangles to lots of protests, they are much more parlimentary focused the do not do much to organise protests. My point is that this is not a ‘Greens rally’ it is much broader, albeit this one is quite small. In many protests, especially the bigger ones greens members take hundereds of their slogans to hand out to protesters to carry during the rally, so even the people holding thoes triangles may not actually be greens members.
